Stephenson and Allare Named

NHSGCA Players of the Year

Adam Stephenson of Greenville, North Carolina, and Katie Allare of Scottsdale, Arizona, were named 2008 NHSGCA Players of the Year for boys and girls high school golf. This is the fourth year of the awards program, which honored 19 boys and girls as All-Americans and Players of Achievement. Nearly 120 players have been recognized through this program. The awards are based on playing ability, academics, community service and extra-curricular activities.

Stephenson was the Coastal Conference (3A/4A) Player of the Year in 2008 and made the All-Conference team all four years that he played at J. H. Rose High School. He shot a 67 at the regional championship, finishing second by virtue of a five-hole playoff. Adam finished in the top 10 percent of his class and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Science Honor Society. He is an Eagle Scout, works with a junior golf program in his community and is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Allare helped her team, perennial power Xavier College Preparatory, add to its list of state championships as a junior and senior. She finished 13th in the state championship both years and had a scoring average of 75. An outstanding student, Katie was a four-time Arizona Interscholastic Association scholar athlete. Her numerous extra-curricular activities included National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Student Ambassador and Key Club.  She volunteered at golf clinics in her community and helped organize the collection of 35,000 cans of food for the St. Vincent DePaul Dining Room. Katie is currently playing golf at the University of Notre Dame.

The NHSGCA Awards are selected by section representatives of the National High School Golf Coaches Association. The awards are based on playing ability, academics, citizenship (community activities), and extra-curricular activities (additional school activities).

The NHSGCA is a non-profit professional association for high school golf coaches.  The mission of the association is to provide educational programs and services for high school golf coaches.
