The National High School Golf Coaches Association (NHSGCA), a non-profit professional association for high school golf coaches, was officially launched in the spring of 2002. The NHSGCA provides national leadership, meaningful educational programs and services for high school golf coaches and promotes the educational values of high school golf. Additionally, the NHSGCA works with key associations, organizations and entities in the golf industry as part of an ongoing effort to improve coaching at the high school level. The NHSGCA is an association of high school coaches for high school coaches. The NHSGCA was founded by SMA Management Group, L.C. (SMA), a Kansas City-based management and consulting firm that specializes in managing amateur sports organizations. Michelle Pond, SMA director of client services, is the executive director. Rich Hunter, former NCAA executive and SMA president/CEO, is the NHSGCA president. Education is a primary component of the NHSGCA. The association provides opportunities for its member coaches to share their coaching knowledge and experience with their peers through coaching tips in the newsletter and on the website, the discussion thread on the website or being on the program at the NHSGCA Coaching School. Coaches with all levels of experience benefit from NHSGCA programs and services. Golf is the fifth most popular high school sport for boys and the eighth for girls. Approximately 18,000 men and women coach high school golf, while over 220,000 boys and girls participate in the sport.
